Learning Spanish can be fun and enjoyable, but it takes time. One way to shorten the learning curve is by using free Spanish worksheets. While they are no substitute for a good course in Spanish, they can be quite helpful in improving your language skills. There are three main ways to use them.

Free Spanish worksheets are quite limited in their scope; they just don’t have very much to offer the individual looking to learn a new language. However, they can allow you to brush up on some of your Spanish skills. And this is the way to use them. They cannot take the place of a course, but they can act as a supplement to that course.

1. The first way to use them is to exercise your Spanish phrases. The worksheets that are available usually offer several ways to improve your language skills. One very good way to use them is to practice your phrases. Like all languages, Spanish contains many phrases that are used in everyday life. As you learn to speak the language, you will discover you can’t do without at least some of these phrases. Many of the worksheets offer help with phrases so don’t be afraid to download as many as you can. After all, they’re free.

2. The second way free Spanish worksheets can help you is by teaching you the alphabet. But isn’t that one of the first things you learn when you’re picking up a new language? Yes and no. Some people learn the alphabet of a new language very quickly, others do not. It never hurts to increase your knowledge of the Spanish alphabet. And these free worksheets are usually loaded with lessons to improve your knowledge of the ABC’s in Spanish.

3. Finally, a great way to use free Spanish worksheets is to improve your counting skills. Language isn’t just about words, it’s also about numbers. You have to know how to count in English and the same goes for Spanish. You must know how to count. And the worksheets are often ideal when it comes to number and counting exercises. They can be very easily used for just this purpose. After you’ve learned your ABC’s, you can learn your 123′s in Spanish.

Free Spanish worksheets cannot help a person learn Spanish by themselves. However, they can be a handy little supplement to anyone who seeks to learn the Spanish language.

By: Nathan Hayes

They say that those who are the most competitive in the job market speak a second language, and so many people are clambering to learn how to speak Spanish because they think it will be the easiest new language to learn. After all, in some places of the United States there are just as many people that speak Spanish as those that speak English and it is important to learn the languages that you are going to need the most.

Spanish language learning software can help you learn the difficult language that is Spanish. Between verb tenses, vocabulary, and reading and word recognition there are so many different ways to go about learning Spanish with the help of Spanish language learning software that the options are virtually endless.

No matter what your strong points are or what your weak points are when it comes to learning, there are programs out there that can help. As a matter of fact, there are even Spanish languages learning software programs out there for younger children whose parents want to teach them to learn how to speak the Spanish language. Many of these programs are not designed simple enough for children and other child Spanish language learning software programs are designed too simple for children of a certain language, so you want to try out the Spanish language learning software that is best for you.

They say that English is the hardest language to learn, so be thankful that it is not English language learning software you are looking into. It is important to know that Spanish language is not learned only by Spanish language learning software or fancy classes or even fancy books. What matters the most is how you put your Spanish words to use in the practical world. If you never have any reason to use the language, your Spanish that you have learned so far will probably not last very long at all, and there is no use having a language in your head that you do not plan on putting to use.

You can purchase Spanish language learning software from just about any book store or cultural store. If you attend a college or school, the school library or book store should have a plethora of Spanish language learning software available for lending or for purchase, so sort through that and see what kinds of software programs you might be able to put to use in your Spanish learning endeavors.

Nobody ever said that learning Spanish would be easy and finding the right Spanish language learning program is no easier. It is important to take your time and find the right product that can really help you learn, or you will just be wasting your money and your time. Learning the Spanish language is something to be commended, but it won’t be easy.

By: Dean Novosat

Spanish is thought by many to be one of the most beautiful and romantic languages communicated in the world and is the native tongue of over 400 million people throughout the world. In terms of the amount of speakers, the language is ranked as the third most often spoken and it is also the official mother tongue in access of twenty countries. Spanish courses to learn this language are highly popular due in large part to these telling statistics.

A Language of Sophistication

Spanish is considered one of the romantic types of languages and it has its roots centered in Latin. Numerous people who do not even speak Spanish love to hear it being spoken since it has a beautiful, flowing, sing-song quality to it.

Courses that can assist a student in capturing that quality of the Spanish language are especially helpful. In addition to being one of the more common spoken tongues, Spanish is also the second most widely used languages in the US after the English language.

Additionally, it is one of the consistently favorite selections in language study when it comes time to make a choice to learn a second language. This all plays part in making Spanish courses highly popular and available on a wide scale.

Courses of these types are so popular since, in addition to being an elegant and beautiful language, it is also thought by many to be one of the easier foreign languages to assimilate and it is enjoyable to speak. And, since it is in such wide use, it is also reasonably simple to find people who either speak Spanish as their native tongue or who are studying it as well, which is very helpful when it comes time for you to practice your conversational skills.

Culture Influencing The Masses

An additional reason why courses are so well liked and that learning Spanish as a second language is at an all-time high, is primarily because of the culture. In the last several years there has been growing interest in the Spanish and Latin cultures since they are so vibrant, warm, rich and lively.

In numerous ways, the warmth of the people in Spanish speaking countries is renowned throughout the world, as are quite a few of their of their customs and accomplishments. Just a few of the things ordinarily related to the culture and lifestyle of Spanish speaking people are flamenco guitars, the tango as well as the running of the bulls.

If you are intrigued in learning the Spanish language, there are numerous courses which to choose from. For many people high school is the starting place, taking Spanish as one of their elective courses. The majority of community colleges, state and private universities make available courses in the Spanish language from beginners all the way up to advanced levels.

Strength in Numbers

There are also numerous local, informal groups that get together on a regular basis so that they can practice speaking the dialect. The majority of these types of groups are either free to join or for a very minor donation to cover the cost of renting a meeting place.

Recently, with the broad accessibility of the internet and with technological advances in web site content, Spanish courses are more readily available over the internet as well. While there are distinct benefits to learning Spanish in a group setting, such as being able to talk and give one another feedback as well as pointers, there is also quite a bit to be said for online language study. The biggest gain to online courses is convenience, because you can work at your own schedule, pace and location.

By: Korbin Newlyn

If you are wondering why people are rushing to learn Spanish these days, it might be hard to pinpoint one particular reason. If you are an American, your reason for learning Spanish may be far different than a European who has decided it’s time to learn the language.

So, why is learning Spanish important to so many people? Let us give you some facts first:

* Spanish has become the second language of the United States

* The Spanish language is gaining importance as a second or third language in many European countries

* There are over 400 million Spanish speakers around the globe, only exceeded by those groups speaking English, Chinese, and Hindustani.

* Spanish is the fourth most popular language in the world and the native, or official, language on four different continents.

So, enough for the geography lesson. So why should you make the time and investment to learn Spanish? Let me tell you some of the more popular reasons why people like you and me want to learn Spanish:

It’s Very Easy to Learn

The Spanish language is truly one of the easiest foreign languages to learn. Much of the Spanish vocabulary is similar to English. Better yet, written Spanish is almost completely phonetic. Even a complete beginner can look at almost any Spanish word and tell how it should be pronounced. Of course, there are a few differences in the grammar and verb structure, but the basic grammar is relatively straightforward enough to allow you to carry on a meaningful conversation after just a few lessons.

Learning Spanish is Fun

If you like to take on a basic challenge, then learning to talk, read, and speak Spanish is your cup of tea. As far as difficulty, learning the Spanish language is quite basic and you can really have some fun in the process. The enjoyment involved in mastering a second language and being able to speak with native speakers can be extremely rewarding. The thrill of having a second language also opens up a whole new world, and different cultures, to you.

Enhance Your Travel and Vacation Experiences

Knowing how to speak Spanish expands your options when you scour the globe for a new vacation experience. Countries that you have avoided in the past due to the language barrier now become prime targets for your new travels. There is nothing worse than traveling to a new country when you cannot communicate with the local population. Imagine being able to converse with people in most Central and South American countries (and many European countries) in their native language. Whether you just learn a few common Spanish phrases or learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation like a native speaker, you will find that it can really open new doors to you while increasing your fun and excitement in a new land.

Improve Your Job Skills

It’s amazing how many new jobs are now requiring candidates to possess multilingual skills in order to meet the qualifications of the position. For instance, certain regions in the United States have a significant Hispanic population and influence. Employment candidates with Spanish as a second language are highly sought after in these areas and are paying a premium to attract them. Being able to speak Spanish is also a big resume booster and can lead to a better paying job, regardless of your area of employment.

Hopefully we have provided a reasonable answer as to the question posed earlier; “why is learning Spanish important for so many people?” We have touched on the more common reasons given by many Spanish students for wanting to learn this wonderful language, but not a comprehensive list for sure. Of course, each person has their own motivation for taking Spanish lessons. But regardless of your motivation for wanting to speak Spanish, the experience can be fun and rewarding and leave you with a new skill that you can use for a lifetime.

By: William Wilson

Searching for an effective Spanish language course can seem a bit of a hard task.

However, actually making the decision to learn Spanish is itself, an important step in the learning process.

Quite often the feeling of procrastination can delay that decision. Oh, I’ll start next month, or when I get back from holiday and a myriad of other excuses.

It’s no wonder, as these days there are so many different demands on our time.

Also where do you start looking for Spanish courses?

Having the motivation to want to learn is another point to bear in mind.

Generally speaking many native English speakers from places like the U.K. are lazy at learning foreign languages.

Whether that’s the fault of the respective countries education system or not is another matter. We boldly travel to foreign countries and assume that someone will speak English and we will be understood.

Looking at the the facts for a brief moment, Spanish is spoken globally by over 400 million people and ranks in the top three of most spoken languages behind Chinese and English.

Spanish language courses do vary in quality and price and the adage of you get what you pay for applies here, as to most things that we buy.

When choosing which course to go for bear these factors in mind before purchasing.

Does the course have good support?

Beginners often have a lot of questions that they need help in answering.

Is the support offered via email or an online assistant or live help as some sites call it. In today’s age we like to get instant answers to our problems.

How is the Spanish language course presented to the learner?

Is the course web-based or a mixture of audio CD’s and DVD’s. Some students may prefer the fact that with CD’s you can learn on the move.

By: Peter Foremski

A Useful and Versatile Foreign Language Learning Tool

If you’re a foreign language teacher or foreign language learner, you should take advantage of one of the most useful and versatile language learning methods available – the Internet. While using the internet for English as a foreign language learning is not exactly news anymore, using the internet as a foreign language learning tool has yet to be fully explored even among institutes and those whose progress in foreign language acquisition has been stalled. Two highly useful approaches that can be successfully applied to the learning of almost any foreign language are content-based instruction and task-based learning.

Learning Spanish Online Using CBI and TBL

As an example, suppose you want to learn or improve your Spanish using the internet. Using content-based instruction and task-based learning you might go onto websites in Spanish in order to learn by using the foreign language to acquire knowledge in cultural or Spanish-language-related areas like foods, travel, geography, music, folk lore, dance and other Spanish-speaking-country-based aspects. Here are some practical websites you could surf for ideas to boost your Spanish language skills while steeping yourself in related language elements. The sites are in Spanish but are not Spanish language teaching sites, instead the focus is on teaching and learning other themes which are taught and practiced in Spanish. Since they are principally web sites for native Spanish speakers, you’ll be getting authentic language throughout while your foreign language communicative skills take off like the space shuttle.

SENA Virtual

SENA or the Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje in Colombia offers quite a number of free online courses. These are great for learning and practicing the Spanish language in an authentic context while developing knowledge and skills in other areas too. I’ve actually gone through a couple of the cooking courses offered online here too – with excellent results, I might add. It’s an interesting, delicious introduction into the varied cultures of Colombia. Check out one of the cooking videos I produced during the SENA Colombian Foods cooking course in Spanish for “Arroz Llanero” online at YouTube.

Emagister

This adult education site also features free online courses in Spanish. The areas of specialization here include Business Administration, internet, marketing and sales, and human rights, as well as finance, accounting and technical science and mathematics course offerings.

Mailxmail

This website boasts more than 1242 free online courses in Spanish. So whatever else interests you, you can very likely practice your Spanish language reading, writing and comprehension skills using authentic language. More than 270 internet and computer courses are offered including topics in Power Point, MS Word, Excel, Photo Shop, MS Office, Linux, Java, Flash and programming language tutorials. Another 390 plus courses are business administration and information based to help to hone your Spanish language and business operation skills. This could offer some great insight if you’re living and working in any one of the world’s 21 Spanish-speaking countries.

AulaFacil

At this likewise excellent web site for a flurry of free online courses in the Spanish language, the extensive lineup is headed by courses in Cooking, crafts, pets, painting and drawing in addition to several self-help course offerings. I found some of the cooking courses online here to be especially interesting too. After all, you do still EAT, don’t you? Well then, one great way into a foreign culture is through its foods.

coEduca

Another good site with a Spanish ton of free online courses for those willing to take the plunge in ramping up their Spanish language skills to new and greater heights. The course theme areas vary from Arts and Culture to Science and Technology through Economics and Business in addition to Computer Sciences and Tourism and Gastronomy.

So your Spanish language acquisition can not only be intersting and fun but lively and delicious to boot. Who said that foreign language learning has to be boring, tedious or dull? In the words of Shaggy, “It wasn’t me”!

By: Larry M. Lynch

Many philologists and other language experts maintain that learning any other language sharpens one’s understanding of one’s own native tongue. This is especially true if the languages are closely related. English has strong Latin roots, so all of the Romance Languages are related to English.

Latin was the official language of England up until the year 1250, when King John of England declared English to be the official language. The Magna Charta, written in 1215, was written out in Latin.

The English language encompasses two major branches: the Old English branch and the newer, mostly Latin-based branch. Old English is noted for its strength, simplicity, clarity and forcefulness. It uses mostly words of one syllable. A good example of old English might be, “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

The newer, mostly Latin-based branch of English is the colorfully descriptive side, the words used to paint pictures in the mind’s eye, the colors the tones, the descriptive nuances.

It is said that English is a language of merchants, of traders, and as such, it has borrowed from many languages (that is why the grammar, spelling and pronunciation is so irregular!)

There are still Latin words used directly in the English legal dialect. Words like “pro se” (literally, ‘in favor of one’s own self’: If you represent yourself in court, without an attorney, you are said to be acting ‘pro se’) and habeas corpus (literally, ‘you shall have the body’: a writ requiring the body of a person to be brought before a judge or court, especially for investigation of a restraint of a person’s liberty).

Medical terms are predominantly of Latin origin. When you know even just a little Spanish, you will find that you can read medical documents written in Spanish easily, because the medical terms are almost identical.

Frequently Spanish medical terms use the exact same words as English, only adding an ‘a’ or making other minor changes. Thiamin becomes tiamina, melatonin become melatonina, aspirin – aspirina, etc.

The relationship between English and Spanish is so close that there are even learning courses to learn Spanish based on this closeness. They focus primarily on words that are the same in each language, such as ‘actor’, ‘doctor’ and ‘parasol’.

[Parasol in Spanish is literally, para sol, for sun. The word in Spanish for umbrella is paraguas, for waters (rain).]

In American English there are even words, coming mostly from the Southwestern U.S., taken directly from Spanish. ‘He’s in the hoosegow’ (jail) is from the Spanish word ‘juzgado’. Juzgado is a Spanish word for Court. The Court holds people in or sentences them to jail, hence the word hoosegow, for jail, or ‘under the power of the Court’.

Another example is the word, “cahoots” as in, “They was in cahoots!” The word cahoots comes from the Spanish, “con juntas” meaning in conjunction or (working) together.

As you can see, there are many similarities between English and Spanish that sharpen our understanding of both languages.

We also learn from the differences. In English the verb ‘to be’ is basic and has a wide scope. In Spanish the broad meaning of ‘to be’ is broken into two distinct parts and is expressed by two different, separate verbs, ‘ser’ and ‘estar’.

Ser deals with the nature or intrinsic, relatively unchangeable aspect of a thing. ‘estar’ deals with more temporary, changeable aspects of a thing that speak to its present condition rather than its nature.

For example, in Spanish I would say, “Soy hombre. Estoy cansado.” (I am a man. I am tired.) This because once I have rested, I will no longer be tired; that condition is changeable; so I use the present tense of ‘estar’ which is estoy, to indicate that right now, I am tired.

But the condition of being a man is (generally) permanent and unchangeable, so I use the present tense of ‘ser’ which is ‘soy’, to indicate that I am a man (was, am and will be, permanently!).

This leads to some deep and interesting thinking about which characteristics are intrinsic and which are changeable. “To be, or not to be, that is the question!” brings up some intriguing questions; is that ‘soy’ or ‘estar’? Since ‘soy’ is generally unchangeable (thus there would be no choice) it must mean ‘estar’… doesn’t it?

In conclusion, in response to the question, “Will learning Spanish improve one’s understanding of English?, the answer is clearly, “Yes!”.

And I hope the above examples and discussion have given you an idea of why this is true, and piqued your interest to learn more!

By: Jorge Chavez
